Cinco de Mayo Maracas

Cinco de Mayo commemorates an important day in Mexican history. Introduce your kids to Mexican culture and celebrate the upcoming holiday with your family by making a festive craft that lends itself to artists of any age.

These paper maracas provide a fun and easy activity to do around Cinco de Mayo with supplies you have lying around the house.  Let your kids decorate their own maraca and watch their imagination run wild! Using any variety of craft items – including pom poms, glitter, markers, buttons, tissue paper – will make this activity unique each time you do it.

Paper Plate Maracas

Supplies

  • 1 paper plate per person
  • Dried beans, rice, or popcorn kernels
  • Stapler
  • Paint, markers, crayons
  • Any additional decorating materials (craft punches, glitter, sequins, etc.)
  • Optional- streamers

Directions
Parents
Put a handful or two of the beans, rice, or kernels in a paper plate. Fold the plate in half and staple around the edges to hold the beans inside with room to shake.
Kids
Decorate both sides of the plate however you want!

Add extra flare to your maracas by using glue or tape to attach streamers to the bottom of the plates as shown in the example above.
