17 Month old not talking much 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I have a 17 Month old (today) that is not talking much, and i forget how much they should be talking? I have a 4 year old also that was very advanced, and i know that my 4 year old does most of the talking for my littlest one, so i know that he will be alittle bit behind. Anyway how many words should he be saying? he understands everything that we tell him.

Thanks

I don't really remember how many words a 17 month old should be saying, but I don't think it is something to be worried about just yet. I would think as long as he is saying a couple of words that he is doing just fine.

You might ask your four year old to stop talking for the other one. I only say that because you are right that it will delay the baby's language skills and it is important for him to speak for himself.

How many words is he saying? My daughter didn't start talking as early as my son has & if I remember correctly at her 18 month appt. the Dr. said she should have between 3-5 words. I wouldn't worry too much until he is 2 or older. My niece barely spoke until she was almost 3.

Well for a while there we were having a hard time with our Second son and how much he didn't talk. It was all jibber jabber till 27months old or so.He understood everything we told him, it's just when he talked we had very little clue as to what he was saying. Now he's 29 months old and doing a lot better surprising us all the time. It's not that it's extremely clear or perfect but he can count to 30 and say all of his ABC. Our first son knew his ABC at 16 months and so we thought that wonderful and we waited for our second to do the same. That never happened. Our first is very intellectual and our second is very advanced in motor skills. Walking early, wrestling when he could crawl. Very lean and strong.

They say that a child has to get to a certain place in their learning and then they can move on to the next. So maybe your son is just working on something else right now and the talking will come later. I truly feel that if your son understands everything you say to him that everything is ok. You just have to wait for him time to talk.

Take care..and good luck. Just remember patience is the key and never stop teaching him how to say things.

My son is 16 months old and he doesn't talk either. He gets Mom and Dad out when he feels like it I think it is perfectly normal!
