ARCHERY AS A SPORT

GENERAL BENEFITS

•    Improves hand-eye coordination

•    Teaches mental concentration, focus, and composure

•    Instills patience and self-discipline

•    Gives a child body awareness, tones the back and arm muscles, and builds upper body strength

•    Gains physical strength and stamina. A typical archery tournament round consists of 60 arrows for the beginning divisions and 120 arrows for older divisions. Given the typical draw weight of the bows, this can add up to over 3,600 pounds pulled in a few hours.

WHAT TO GENERALLY LOOK FOR IN A SPORTS PROGRAM

•    Step back and carefully reflect on the cost, both in terms of time and financial commitment, before your child jumps into the fray. Before you say yes, make sure you and your child really understand how much time the activity will require, including the amount of practice between lessons or games, the length of practices, the length of the season, and travel time.

Approximately 1 in 5 parents will become volunteer coaches for their child’s team. Before doing so, you will need to clarify both how your child feels about this decision and how you feel about taking on the hard work involved in being a coach. Many parents mean well when they volunteer to coach, but don’t fully realize how much time and effort it takes to do this successfully.

Think you've got a 'bad' coach on one of your child's sports teams? Use our checklist to decide if you might have a problem in the making.
