Image Children with advanced skills and intellect may not be able to reach their full potential without special attention and challenges from their teachers. They may not recognize just how far they can go, fear failure, fall prey to boredom, and develop negative attitudes towards class.

Standard teaching methods break subjects down into easily-grasped material, making a smart child feel frustrated and bored by learning at such a slow pace.

To keep your child's mind stimulated, sign him child up at an academic enrichment center, or engage him in intellectual and creative after-school activities such as chess club or art class.

Talk to your child's teacher, explain your concerns, and ask the following questions:

  • Can you make assignments more challenging for my child?
  • Does the school have a formal program for gifted and talented children or offer tests to assess giftedness?
  • What can I do at home to enhance my child's educational experience?
  • Is there a possibility of my child spending less time with curriculum he has mastered and more time with opportunities?
