Holiday traditions prove an amazing way to celebrate the holidays with those most precious to us. Whether taking part in a long-standing annual tradition like trimming the Christmas tree, decorating holiday cookies, or attending a community tree lighting, setting aside time to spend time with those we love over the holidays builds memories that last a lifetime.

While some traditions begin when we are kids and live on year after year, some also start later in life – and this became true for me recently when I attended The Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker this year with my parents. I couldn’t believe I had never experienced The Nutcracker. Let’s just say from the moment the show began until the final curtain closed I was captivated by this magical performance that symbolizes the joy, imagination, and the spirit of the holidays!

Mikko Nissinen’s critically-acclaimed production of The Nutcracker with the Boston Ballet won the title of the best-loved Nutcracker production in the United States. Not only does their company perform, but members of the Boston Ballet School – the largest ballet school in North America – also dance on stage. My parents, although they have seen the Nutcracker before, they raved they had never seen a production like this one – we were all blown away by the enthusiasm, dancers, lighting, costumes, etc.

As the lights went down in the Boston Opera House, and the orchestra began to play the first chords of Tchaikovsky, the ones we all know belong to The Nutcracker, the anticipation of the performance ignites, my inner child wondered, “what’s to come in the performance?” Honestly, even if it wasn’t my first time seeing the Nutcracker, my anticipation would have built with the sounds of the first few chords because it promises that spectators are about to be swept away into an enchanted holiday experience.

The talent of these dancers both impresses and inspires. This timeless story line most definitely sets the mood for the festive season – and proves the perfect way to start an annual holiday tradition by enjoying with your family or friends.
