We all know people who buy only organic food, do yoga and meditate regularly, and swear by herbal remedies and acupuncture. Maybe we even do one or two of those things ourselves. So it should come as no surprise that many new Moms bring their holistic lifestyle to the world of motherhood.
In what is a new and fast-growing trend, holistic parenting is taking the place of the traditional parenting styles of our own parents’ generation. In fact, there is now a national group for holistic parenting, with chapters in as many as 30 states. Although the mothers don’t always agree on every point (and don’t have to in order to consider themselves holistic), this much is clear – it heralds a hot trend in parenting.
Among other things, the holistic mothers tend to support natural childbirth, cloth diapers, co-sleeping, organic food, healthy living, alternative medicine, anti-consumerism, and alternatives to public education. They also stress both attachment parenting, which promotes a strong bond between parent and child (through methods such as breastfeeding and baby wearing), and positive parenting, which seeks alternatives to discipline.
With the nation's shift towards holistic living, environmental concerns, and healthy living that has been growing since the 1970’s, this new wave of parenting was predictable.
After all, if Mom eats only organic food, wouldn’t we expect baby to do the same? And it seems more and more that wherever there is a new trend for adults – comprehensive spa visits, new, hip clothing, mp3 players – a corresponding trend for babies and kids is sure to follow right on its heels.
So you thought baby and child yoga and organic snacks for kids were just a fad, think again. And just say, Ohmmmmm.
