Kate Bosworth is a talented, beautiful, dynamic, and thin celebrity. As in super-thin. As in anorexic.
I remember seeing her in Blue Crush in 2002, playing an aspiring surf star and girl athlete extraordinaire, and thinking how healthy and gorgeous she was and what an incredible role model she would be for young girls. Fast track to 2006's super summer hit Superman Returns and this fit and fabulous body is replaced by a waifish shell as lead female Lois Lane.
How dramatically sad to see a young actress with naturally beautiful features take her body from a toned, amazing physique (as pictured then in 2002) to a skeletal one (pictured today). Kate's clavicle protrudes, her chest caves in - she is emaciated.
Why must these young Hollywood girls starve themselves to achieve "It Girl" status? Why do they think that success can only be obtained if they can squeeze into double zero designer duds? Clearly, the message is coming down from on high: as in the director and producer and casting agents that thin in totally in.
Celebrity women are first criticized for being too heavy, then celebrated for being elegantly thin and then critiqued for being too skeletal. It's not surprising then to see stars like Nicole Richie, who was first applauded for losing the weight she carried on the first season of The Simple Life only now to be reprimanded for getting down to an unhealthy ninety pound weight.
It is painful to see Kate Bosworth, an incredibly talented actress, move across the movie theater screen, looking larger than life, yet too fragile to appear, (as she plays in Superman) the mother of a four-ear-old boy. Kate's size makes her appear childlike, not maternal - after all, the only people I know in real life who weigh as little as the 23-year-old movie star are under the age of twelve! Reports have it that the 5'7" skinny is just shy of 100 pounds.
Hollywood's female stars and role models are more weight obsessed than ever before and it shows when a seemingly flawless and much lusted after actress Jessica Alba claims to wear body hugging Spandex underwear to hide her "lumps and bumps." What? Quick, get out the magnifying glass!
Fear not Hollywood elite - you are not fat, you do not have lumps and bumps and you can and should eat more than 800 calories a day. In fact, if you did, you might be happier and less obsessed with what no one, other than your fellow celebrities and those suffering from serious self-esteem issues or depression, aspires to be - a toothpick!
