Well, I predicted it during my
CNN segment on caffeinated moms, and it has finally come true: snack chips infused with caffeine. Engobi, short for “Energy Go Bites,” are new bite-sized snacks made of rice, corn, wheat – and, oh yeah, caffeine.
The website repeatedly touts the little chips’ ability to “get you wired.” Although some might argue our kids seem “wired” enough already. Back in “the old days,” Moms tried to keep their kids away from the sugar and caffeine in soda, intent on pushing healthier options like milk and water after school or with dinner. Next we tackled energy drinks, which, once they became popular amongst kids, became controversial (and thus even more appealing to kids). And now we’ll have to contend with chips – which, the website is also more than pleased to point out, contain 70% more caffeine than those energy drinks. Which sounds, frankly, a little frightening.
And don’t think college students pulling all-nighters to get term papers written and cram for exams are the only ones turning to these alternative forms of caffeine. Moms on the go trying to fit their busy schedules into too-short days are also addicted to caffeine. And article after article has chronicled numerous brands of energy drinks targeting kids (who, experts warn, should be kept away from caffeine as much as possible).
It’s not that we don’t enjoy caffeine; in fact, many of us feel it necessary to keep our hectic lives running smoothly. So now caffeine has entered the snack aisle in an effort to keep families everywhere highly-caffeinated at all times. Don’t like coffee or green tea? No problem; simply tear open a bag of chips. Stay tuned; at this rate, we’ll soon see fruits and vegetables infused with caffeine. “Eat your carrots, kids, they’re full of Vitamin A and that always-necessary mid-morning energy boost.” At some point, though, enough is enough.

I think this product is a little dangerous; it should be for adults and as a snack it would be attractive to children.
