In Hollywood, having babies means losing the ability to work, fit into designer clothes and have the undivided attention of casting agents and companies looking for a celebrity endorsement. It's no surprise that a celebrity mom's number one goal, after delivering a healthy, happy baby, is to shed the pregnancy weight as fast as possible. And then some. And continue to remain thin - because as they well know, celebrity mothers must look sexy in order to make up for the lack of sexiness associated with motherhood.
Too bad the public doesn't get a say - like, "Hey Teri, we think you would look way sexier if you put on a few pounds." Victoria Beckham could certainly use an intervention as well - who told her that exposing every inch of taut, stretched-across-muscle skin is attractive? She would be far more sexy if she took a page out of Kate Beckinsale's book and chose to eat and exercise wisely, looking fit, healthy and incredibly beautiful walking around L.A. with her six-year-old daughter.
Unfortunately, extreme skinnies like Victoria Beckham and Teri Hatcher, who are alternatively being picked upon for their withering physiques or randomly applauded for their sexy figures - as Teri was in a recent issue of Life & Style magazine which showed the vanishing Teri on the beach alongside her daughter, who looked like she had more meat on her than her mother - have become the norm. And because of this, many super skinny moms are being described as fabulous, when in fact, they are merely a little less anorexic than their celebrity peers and therefore, not worth criticizing.
Case in point: Michelle Williams (pictured with her daughter). After making a star turn in Brokeback Mountain last year with boyfriend Heath Ledger and father of their one-year-old Matilda, Michelle has lost a considerable amount of weight. What is most unfortunate about Michelle's newly too-skinny body is that it seems that success has taken hold of her at the same time. The idea that in order to be hot in Hollywood, women must starve themselves thin, is reinforced by Michelle's new star status and post-baby frame.
Denise Richards (pictured on vacation) is another example of someone who is continually encouraged to maintain her lithe frame, having gotten more glamorous magazine shoot offers since her divorce from Charlie Sheen, birth of her second child and subsequent, dramatic weight loss. Denise was featured in Playboy right after the birth of her and Sheen's youngest and her startling post-pregnancy weight drop was a well-documented "success" story in the media.
While it is the media's fault for setting up the average mother to fail in attaining the "ideal" weight and look, it is these mothers' responsibility, as role models to their children, other mothers and women worldwide, to stay fit but healthy and not to give in to the Hollywood eating disorder craze.
