Imaging_ourselvesIn the aftermath of September 11, Paula Goldman found hope and inspiration amidst fear and despair. In her efforts to exhibit the strength and energy of a generation of women all across the world, she joined forces with the International Museum of Women to form Imagining Ourselves, “a global generation of women.” Herself demonstrating the vigor and resolve she hoped to bring out in others, Goldman was able to create a community of women dedicated to bringing about both change and opportunity.

Imaging Ourselves strives to not only draw together women across cultures and engender a dialogue through which they can connect with and inspire each other, but also to make a positive difference on a global scale. On March 8, the project will launch as an online platform, and also includes as a book, a celebrity blog on Yahoo!, and other events taking place worldwide.

The theme of the month on the website is Motherhood, and it includes an online conversation with stories from across the globe and a focus on maternal health. (“In an age when even pre-schoolers know how to use Google (and) YouTube…529,000 mothers die every year during pregnancy or…labor,” the current conversation alerts readers.) The website also features information to help women learn how they can take action on a variety of subjects by educating themselves and others and even hosting their own offline gatherings.

Imagining Ourselves is unique in its approach and inspiring in its goal. By allowing women from all over the world to connect online, it opens the doors to a multitude of knowledge, experience, understanding, and possibility. With over 200 countries represented, the project is truly the first to bring together a network of people who can achieve more together than they ever thought possible. In a time when women gain greater strides every day, Imagine Ourselves is one more leap towards not only empowering women, but empowering the world.
