Keeping Divorce Dirty Laundry Where It Belongs

Umathurman_devan_9451413_400Why did Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman split up? I can’t tell you if the rumors of his infidelities are true, but I can tell you this: We won’t be hearing about it from Uma.

In the July 16th issue of Parade, Thurman refuses to bad-mouth her ex, with whom she has two children. "I cannot participate in anything critical about my children's father," she says. "I just need to keep peace. I think it's fair to say that I haven't said one mean thing, and I'm not going to start now. It's terrible for my family."

This is especially gratifying to read when it seems like every day, there’s a new post-divorce revelation about hidden problems in celebrity relationships. My Life on the D-List’s Kathy Griffin says that her soon-to-be-ex-husband stole $72,000 from her, which he denies. Former Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller is in the middle of a bitter divorce in which her ex-husband, doctor Christopher Phillips, accuses her of blackmailing him by threatening to accuse him of drug abuse. He also says she had an affair with a married male athlete. Miller disputes these claims, saying, “The worst thing I ever did to my ex-husband was to put unleaded gas in his car and not premium. With gas prices these days, do you blame me?”

One especially disappointing disclosure came from Hilary Swank, whom I used to consider a class act. In the article that landed her on the cover of Vanity Fair, she says that her marriage to Chad Lowe broke up largely due to his “substance abuse.” While this little tidbit may be true, I fail to see why it was necessary to spill it to the media. We already knew that a couple that seemed genuinely happy is no longer together. Who besides Swank, clad in a white bikini on the Vanity Fair cover, benefits from this revelation? I guess she put the acting skills that earned her two Oscars to use in pretending she had a happy marriage.

None of these estranged couples have children, but divorced celebrity parents aren’t immune from bad-mouthing their exes. Ever since their divorce in 2002, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger have been embroiled in a bitter custody battle over their now 10-year-old daughter Ireland. Baldwin has accused Basinger of turning their daughter against him and questioned his ex-wife’s mental health. Just last month, Basinger filed a motion to keep Baldwin (who, according to Basinger’s father and others, is angry and verbally abusive) from publishing a tell-all book about their divorce. Baldwin says his purpose is to educate people about divorce and custody proceedings. Enter one into the self-serving category.

Meanwhile, in their ongoing divorce, there are very few things that Denise Richards hasn’t accused Charlie Sheen of: physical abuse, threats to kill, child pornography, placing bets via phone during the birth of their second child, even playing a role in the death of the porn star who told the tabloids she had an affair with Sheen. Sheen calls her accusations "a most obvious immature and transparent smear campaign designed to hurt, embarrass and ultimately extort me." We don't know who’s telling the truth (although Sheen’s troubled history lends some credibility to Richards’ claims), but the whole affair makes me glad that Richards and Sheen’s two- and one-year-old daughters aren’t old enough to read what’s being said about their parents. Time will tell how their parents’ situation will affect them in the future.

In contrast, I find Uma Thurman admirable in refusing to elaborate on her divorce from Ethan Hawke, whom she refers to only as her children’s father. In doing so, she would only have exacerbated a situation that was already hard on her children, 8-year-old Maya and 4-year-old Levon. Divorce is hard for any kid, but being followed by paparazzi and seeing your parents’ accusations on magazine covers must make it even worse. Unlike Ireland Baldwin, Uma Thurman’s kids will never have to see their family’s dirty laundry aired out in national magazines.

So did Ethan Hawke cheat on Uma Thurman? For their kids’ sakes, I don’t think I want to know.
