How to choose a baby name with Nymbler

What’s in a name? Anyone who is a parent has had to grapple with the important decision of naming his or her children. Classic or trendy? A family name or a or hybrid? Take the lead from a celebrity?

That was a tough one - I couldn’t decide between Apple and Zahara. I know I went through hundreds of names before my baby girl was born. In the end we wanted to choose a name based on my Scandinavian roots and settled on Kaia.

What’s the baby’s name going to be?

So many of my friends and family are currently expecting and facing the same decision, so I’ve pointed them toward Nymbler.com – a personal baby name assistant. It’s a guide that helps the user choose a name based on their personal taste. Just chose a few names that you like and then Nymbler will offer up ideas. I experimented with the system myself to see if I could find more baby names based on my two daughter’s names.

I typed in Kaia and was presented with a few other Scandinavian names that had been on my original list. Up came Mia, Maya and Kyra. The next step was to delete any undesirable names. After deleting six, the system recalculates and narrows your search down by focusing on the names left and coming up with new ideas. You can also type in two or three names at a time to find combination names or even new variances on a name.

The more I played with Nymbler, the more I liked the choices presented to me. Although, I’m not planning on another child, I think I’ll pass along my new suggestions to my brother and his fiancée who are expecting. I’m sure they’ll completely appreciate my input.

This is really fun. My daughter has yet to commit to a name for my granddaughter to be. She is due in about 10 weeks. Since me calling her Alphabet Soup obviously won't stick after she is born, maybe this will help to come up with a name! {She has yet to take any of my suggestions!}
