New VTech Baby Learning review and giveaway!
My husband and I have a slight addiction to our laptops. We come home, say hello to each other, pull out our phones to check email, and then hop right back on our laptops to respond to late-in-the-day messages. Despite this being standard procedure in our home, we still feel guilty when the 13-month old politely comes over and pushes our devices closed.
Think she’s trying to tell us something? We’re working on not letting work interfere with our home lives too often. But when we have an urgent email to answer, we let Kaia play with her very own laptop made just for her.
A laptop of her very own
The VTech “Baby’s Learning Laptop” offers baby a bright light-up screen to learn shapes, common objects and feelings. Sound effects and music keep them engaged, and a little moveable “mouse” sits off to the side for a fun twist. Kaia likes to sit with her laptop, while mommy and daddy work for a few minutes. It even has a little handle at the top for easy portability.
We recently brought it with us to a burger joint to see how long it would keep her occupied. It was a great distraction while we waited for our meal, letting her push all of the buttons and dance in her seat.
Technology and babies
I recently had a conversation with a colleague over my guilt of using electronics to teach my baby things. I have an app on my iPhone that displays a picture of an animal and then plays the sound that animal makes. Believe it or not, Kaia can now look at those pictures and recite the animal sound with the volume off. My colleague believes that as long as they are learning, what is the hard in using an electronic device to facilitate?
She’s right. I’ve tried to keep electronics to a minimum, but they pervade our daily routine. If they’re very much a part of our life, how can I not teach Kaia the importance of certain items? The VTech Company is an award winning creator of Electronic Learning Products and a global leader in designing age-appropriate learning products that enrich development through fun and smart play. I trust these products and believe they do facilitate learning in innovative ways.
Along with the Learning Laptop, VTech is introducing a Sit-to-Stand Walker that includes sorters, a telephone handset and musical features, and a Peek at Me Bunny that has sensors for interactive touch and hugging play.
All three items are available at VTechKids.com and major toy retailers such as Toys’R us, Walmart and Target.

I think one of the best
I think one of the best teaching moments with my son was when I got him an alphabet puzzle and he just randomly started to name the letters. I decided to see what he knows and pulled all the letters out. I handed them to him one at a time and he knew about 20 of the uppercase letters. He was barely 2 years old at the time. He is now 3 and knows all the uppercase, some of the lower case, and some of the letter sounds. It was so exciting when he showed me he already knew lots and was ready to learn more.

I love reading with my son. Although it's not teaching him a specific skill at this point, it is working towards developing healthy habits and will help him be a better reader in the future!

I think one of the best ones was when we helped my 4 year old count to 100. Next day he went to school and did it and was the only one in class that got them all :)
One of my favorite teaching
One of my favorite teaching moments occurred when I had my youngest son outdoors on our lawn with me, sitting on a blanket. He was so fascinated with the blue sky and clouds, and he asked me how they got there, and I taught him about God and how He made the world. It was very sweet and profound.

We started teaching our boys the names of body parts when they were very young. We did it while we were changing their diapers when they got in they moving stage. It helped them stay still and they loved that we made a game of it.

My grandson is 11 months old and he would love this! One of my many favorite moments is that I taught him the Itsy Bitzy Spider, he tries to do it, but he can't get the fingers together yet, so he just puts his little hands in a lock together and wiggles them...it's so sweet :D

I'm a math teacher so one of my "teachable moments" with my older daughter is when we go on walks around our neighborhood, we practice reading the numbers on the mailboxes. She is four and can identify her numbers from 1 to 100. :)
My favorite teaching moments
My favorite teaching moments are when it comes to cooking. Involving my kids in something as simple as sprinkling shredded cheese on a casserole helps to develop their fine motor skills, their love of measuring and cooking, and they are more apt to eat something they've helped make! :)

I love to read to my granddaughter. She is just starting to talk, so we point to the pictures and say the name of what it is, trying to get her to repeat it. She is so cute trying to mimic us. I am so glad to be able to keep her and her brother every day, and spend time with them.

I love VTech toys! My now 6 yr. old has had many VTech learning toys over the years, starting with the baby laptop & now has the age appropriate VSmile video games & has been using the VReader to practice reading. She uses them at least once or
twice a week & always packs them on long car rides!

At home we also have a lot of electronic devises. And with that comes a bunch of cords to charge all our different devises. My 10 month old has been on the move as of late and likes to try to touch all the cords. We have been saying "No No No" and shaking our heads whenever he would reach for the cords. Yesterday, he went towards the cords and then stopped and shook his head no! It is so much fun to see what they pick up!
My favorite teachable moment
My favorite teachable moment was when my mother taught our daughter to clap and throw up her hands for "hooray!" in just one day.
I think one of the best ones
I think one of the best ones was when we were teaching our then 4 month old, the sign for milk, everytime we gave her milk, we showed her sign for milk. About 2 months after, she was sitting in her high chair, signing to her brother milk, at first i though it was a random gesture, but it turned out that she really did want milk. It was an awesome moment!
