Discovering bento boxes

Recently I was browsing through a ton of mom food blogs and I stumbled upon something amazing - bento boxes. Dramatic as it may sound. I think they are potentially life changing - OK well lunch changing at the very least. And while this may be old news to many of you, I thought it was worth talking about just in case there are other moms out there that did not understand the possibilities with bento.

Say goodbye to cold, stale, boring, environmentally unsound lunches for your family and say hello to bento boxes! There are a ton of styles of bento boxes out there and some are specifically appealing to children. Another fun thing about bento boxes are the accessories.

How to start bento boxing

There are some great mom blogs that almost exclusively feature bento box lunch ideas that kids will love (you will too). Here's a few that I found and fell in love with:

  • Another Lunch was my biggest surprise discovery.  I am in love, love, love with this blog.  If your kids lunches are less than fun, this is a must bookmark.  It’s chock full of great ideas for creating amazing and healthy bento box lunches for your children. No waste + wholesome healthy food my kids would love = happy mom!
  • Lunch In a Box obviously impressed with the bento box idea I dug just a little deeper and I found this one as well and loved all the information offered there on where to shop and much more.
  • Food For the Boys is a simple blog with great photos and ideas for snacks and lunches in a bento box for kids. A great find.

My favorite bento products

Getting started is simple. It is a little bit of an investment but you are buying something that will last for a long time. You can buy the accessories over time so start by choosing the bento box that you and your family will like best and build up over time.

As I was searching I did find a few products that stood out to me though I encourage you to research the possibilities yourself to find the products that will work best for your family.

  • Goodbyn (pictured above) is about as environmentally friendly as it gets. Not only is it reusable but when you are done with it you simply toss it in the recycling bin. The original one is for younger children and comes with ears, stickers, etc. The Too Cool For Ears version is simpler and perfect for older children and even adults. Of course it is also BPAfree.
  • Easy Lunchboxes is another great option since they come in a 4-pack. Simple, very affordable ($13.95 for a set of 4) and very durable.  Don't be fooled by their appearance they are not like the disposable containers at the grocery store, they will last you a long time.

Where to buy bento boxes

Here's a few sites to check out in order to get started:

Of course there are tons of sites that have information and more so have fun exploring all the possibilities. One more step that's simple, convenient and affordable that we can take to a more environmentally friendly family.

Shera is mom to six very active boys (14, 11, 10, 6, 4 and 4) and when she's not chasing after them, or in the kitchen cooking for them, you will find her at her blog A Frog In My Soup
