For this year’s American Heart Month, National Pork Board celebrates the recent certification of pork tenderloin as the American Heart Association’s iconic Heart-Check mark! In honor of this new certification, the National Pork Board plans to sponsor this year’s Ninth Annual Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards to recognize those who have worked to maintain a healthy heart.

As part of the Woman’s Day Red Dress awards, the National Pork Board created a “Dressed for Health” kit filled with heart-healthy essentials including coupons to purchase lean cuts of pork, the “Go Red” black tote bag from the American Heart Association, a BPA-free water bottle, a pedometer, digital meat thermometer, a booklet with the recipes served at the Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards, and the New American Heart Association Cookbook – filled with over 600 healthy recipes!

While this “Dressed for Health” kit includes all the tools to start making steps toward a healthier heart and lifestyle, the newest edition of the American Heart Association Cookbook provides endless opportunities to make these healthy goals come true. The cookbook not only offers you a number of delicious recipes for snacks, entrees, and desserts, but also gives good-health tips to further create this heart-healthy lifestyle. Here’s an especially yummy recipe for you and your family to try!

Boneless Pork Ribs with Black Cherry Barbecue Sauce

Ingredients:

  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 pound boneless pork loin chops, all visible fat discarded, cut into 16 strips, each about 1 inch wide
  • Cooking spray
  • 8 ounces beer (light or nonalcoholic)
  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce (lowest sodium available)
  • ¼ cup all-fruit black cherry spread

Preparation/Cooking Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, stir together the cumin, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper. Add the pork, turning to coat.
  2. Lightly spray a large skillet with cooking spray. Cook the pork over medium-high heat for 3 minutes on each side, or until browned.
  3. Pour the beer into the skillet. Bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes, or until the pork is tender and slightly pink in the center (no stirring needed). Transfer the pork strips to a serving plate, leaving the liquid. Cover the plate to keep warm.
  4. Stir the barbecue sauce and black cherry spread into the cooking liquid. Increase the heat to medium low and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Spoon over the pork.

Oo this sounds really nice.

Oo this sounds really nice. We've really changed our lifestyle this year and I think in doing so we're being very heart-healthy. My husband and I are both following the ChooseMyPlate recommendations for eating protein, veggies and fruits. We've both been drinking lots more water and we are exercising rigorously 6 days per week. We both feel and look better and I hope that we win this giveaway so we can continue to maintain it successfully. :) Thanks!

After my father passed away

After my father passed away from Heart disease, we adopted the AHA diet.... we watch our fat/sodium intake, have reduced our calories, switched to olive oil, incorporate flax seed in our diets, we don't smoke, and we try to stay active as a family. So much of this is common sense stuff.... but it is much easier said than done, what with all of the fast food restaurants always running $1 specials.... will power is key!

Being disabled and having

Being disabled and having problems with walking, unable to bend my right knee or put much weight on that leg, makes exercising difficult. Swimming is the best but I can only do it in the simmer because of reasons to long to get into. My hubby bought me a pool heater for Christmas several years ago to extend my swimming season so I get several weeks extra there. I move as much as possible during the year "walking with help of a cane at home (using crutches when I go out). I cannot sit upright for too long but I do some chair exercise a couple times a week for 15 minute exercises. My biggest problem is cardio exercises and I have not been able to figure a way to do them in my situation.
