When it comes to food, staying organic can be as simple as checking the label, but what about fashion? Keeping your carbon footprint in mind can be difficult when a 50% clearance sale is going on! Here are just a few tips to feel a little better when it comes to fashion and staying green.

Donate your clothes: I know it’s hard to give away that shirt you bought because it goes so great with those shoes you swear you’ll find around your place somewhere, but there may be someone out there who will need and wear it more. Try giving away some clothes every season instead of throwing them away or letting them go to waste in the back of your closet. You’d be helping someone and need and keeping the environment from collecting thrown out, inorganic clothes. Clothes too torn to donate? Try turning them into rags for cleaning around the house!

Keep it cool, keep it cotton: It takes a dedicated person to only buy all organic fabrics when purchasing clothes. If you can’t by organic, try to stick to 100% cotton. It’s comfortable and causes less harm to the environment. Let’s face it, the clothes you wear daily you want to be breathable and moveable, and cotton is the best option for that.

Read fashion magazines online: We all want to stay up to date on the latest trends, but this does not necessarily mean we need a paper magazine to do so. Try searching for your favorite fashion magazines online. Most magazines have easy to read sites whose content is more accessible than it’s paper counterpart and has fewer ads. Some even have fun quizzes and polls to take with results a magazine couldn’t provide.

Wear clothes that don’t need dry cleaning: Save the water and effort by trying to avoid clothes that need to be dry-cleaned. The extra work, water, and gas it takes to dry clean an item can use up a lot of resources over time. While you can use eco-friendly dry cleaners, avoiding these types of clothes can also save you some money! Along with dry cleaning, when washing your clothes try to line dry or lay flat clothes as much as possible. It’ll save energy and you will be less likely to shrink a really cute outfit!

Thrift shopping: Take a fun trip to a thrift store with friends and you may be surprised to what you find. Many thrift stores carry used designer items for a very cheap price. The trip could be fun and silly but you and friend will most likely leave the store with some great finds and a clear conscious!

It only takes small steps and a daily awareness to keep green and make your impact in the world. Staying green doesn’t mean your fashion sense has to suffer, following just some of these simple tips above can keep your carbon footprint small and the world a little healthier.
