Enjoying Legoland Discovery Center in Somerville, MA

My four-year-old is a girly girl. Something about the insistence of tutus, tiaras and impromptu renditions of Frozen’s “Let It Go” in the supermarket aisles makes me scratch my head and wonder how she got this way. So when we were invited to go check out the new Legoland Discovery Center in Somerville, MA, I worried she might be bored. Sure, we play with Legos at home, but only the pink ones.

Well, wrong I was. Kaia was intrigued from the beginning. From the ride up to Somerville, to the time we spotted the enormous Lego-crafted giraffe out front, she was hooked. Upon entering the center, we were led to a bright yellow elevator to watch a short film on the center and wait for our tour to begin. The elevator took us to a very cool control room where children are able to view the creation of the Lego bricks and also create their own Lego character. Next up was the Kingdom Quest Laser Ride, which took us through a journey in our own personal chariot to capture the princess from the trolls and skeletons. Kaia didn’t much care for either the trolls or skeletons, but the promise of a princess at the end, was worth the experience.

The ride let us off in MINILAND, or as I like to call it – attraction for adults. Not that the kids were interested, but talk about a fascinating stroll through some of Boston’s more iconic attractions – built in miniature with Legos! MINILAND features famous Boston locations such as the State House, the Zakim Bridge, Quincy Market – and my favorite- Fenway Park, complete with miniature Lego Red Sox fans.

Then we hit the Merlin’s Apprentice Ride and, the attraction Kaia had been waiting for all day, Lego Friends – Olivia’s House. A girly girls dream, Olivia’s House features a pink and purple living room, pink Legos to build cupcakes and karaoke! We may have spent some time singing “Single Ladies” by Beyonce complete with a few jumps and dance moves.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, we went on to build a Lego race car and race them with our friends Jackson and Jason on the Lego Racer’s: Build & Test track. And then caught an eight minute 4D Lego movie! I’m not sure Kaia knew what to expect considering she put her glasses on upside down, but once we straightened that out, she was delighted to try to catch oranges flying off a fruit truck, flying Lego characters and was just a little terrified of the Lego monster. (Well he was a tad scary!) The best part was the real bubbles at the end mimicking the ice-turned snow in the movie. With a few movies to chose from, it’s a great resting point for tot-chasing parents.

While the Play Zone looked absolutely awesome with its climbing walls, slides and jungle gym (and another great time for parents to rest), we decided to round out our time with a cookie from the Café. If there is one thing I love about children’s attractions, it’s when they provide a great sitting area for lunch with the option to buy there instead of packing a meal on the go. As a busy mom, I sometimes just like to leave that extra bag at home!
