National survey finds 91% of Moms worrying about holiday shopping this year and 75% devoting more time and research to holiday purchases given the economic recession. Mom Central’s First Annual Gift Guide provides just what they wished for.

Newton, MA - November 25, 2008 – This year, given a now official recession, Moms are devoting more time and research to their holiday purchases. According to a survey just completed by national mom marketing agency Mom Central Consulting, 75% of Moms research items or seek out recommendations from friends and family before buying, and 91% find holiday shopping more challenging this year. In fact, 79% of Moms expect to spend less money this holiday season than last, and 58% of Moms think holiday shopping requires more creativity this year, since they won’t buy as many big ticket items.

Fifteen fashionistas hit the campus buildings of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls in Boston yesterday, along with one not-as-fashionable Mom Blogger (me) for a corporate blogger retreat. OK, I have to start by confessing that I am a card carrying member. Of their Visa that is, and for the past fifteen years, thanks to monthly $20 merchandise coupons. So I guess that makes me a passionista?! So with that biased perspective in mind, I arrived at the sprawling modern red-brick and sleek glass campus of TJX headquarters.

couplephoneA few weeks ago, a friend of mine and I were chatting when she shared a story about an argument she recently had with her husband. Apparently, he had banned her laptop and blackberry from their bed. After first being completely horrified, then laughing hysterically (exactly what DID she need to do with her laptop in bed?), I realized that my friend’s husband was on to something. With a blackberry, laptop, and likely an errant kid or pet (or both!) crowding even a king size bed, how on earth were my friend and her husband going to get any time for themselves?

The example of texting from bed notwithstanding, according to a new survey, “Rating Romance in a Wired World,” conducted by Mirena, this kind of communication gap is more prevalent that you might think. The survey found that both women and men reach for electronic devices three times more often each day than they hug or kiss their partners. Despite technology’s ability to keep us connected when apart, it seems to also have the adverse effect of creating distance in some of our most important relationships.
