Older_parentsSo many articles have been popping up lately about “older” parents. First there was a
horde of articles about men in their 60’s starting their “second families” and raising young kids. Then came the story about the 60-year-old woman who gave birth to twins through in-vitro fertilization. This, of course, sparked the always ongoing debate about whether younger or older moms are better.

So what is it with the medical advances creating these change-ups? Or is this newest story just women’s revenge for the ability of men to have children later in life – which is a skill they often employ with younger women? Recently came the generally ignored news that men might have their own version of the infamous biological clock. But it seems that as long as men still find themselves able to have kids well into their 50’s, 60’s, and sometimes even beyond, they’re going to keep doing so. Do women feel a need to compete with this?

SupernannyThe newest outlandish trend to hit motherhood doesn’t involve baby spas, martini playdates, or diaper bags that cost more than the family car. According to a recent Boston Globe article, people are taking Supernanny to heart. It seems that now, when the going gets tough, rather than turning to their mothers, friends, or even parenting books, Mom and Dad bring in the parenting consultants. Which, by definition, means someone who charges exorbitant fees to tell you things you already know.

Lindsay_lohanFor weeks  the rumors were buzzing but finally, it was made official: Lindsay Lohan had cancelled her 21st birthday party at Los Angeles nightclub hotspot PURE. To say the least, the cancellation was very unlike Lindsay, infamous for her incessant partying and underage drinking which all lead to her drunken hit-and-run.  While I am happy to see that the wild starlet attempted to take her recovery seriously, I can’t help but speculate the sincerity in her decision. Could this have been yet another media stunt for the headline-hungry Lohan?

Lohan’s rep released a statement explaining that in exchange for canceling the hyped party (that she was already paid for, with a signed contract), Lindsay agreed to make an appearance at the nightclub PURE in the future. In turn, PURE, issued a statement wishing Lindsay well on her road to recovery.  But it seems like PURE is part of the problem.  Clearly, these nightclubs advocate underage drinking by allowing Lindsay to frequent their hotspots. It’s just unfortunate that the clubs themselves aren’t receiving any of the blame.

Boy_doing_choresWell, it looks like it took the Brits across the pond to remind us of something we should have been paying attention to all along. An article in the Sunday Times out of London recently lamented the fact that – despite the growing number of women wage-earners and the increased support of men on the home front – we are raising our sons to believe in gender-biased chores.

We’ve all seen it. We’ve probably even done it. It’s sort of Upstairs, Downstairs for kids – only, instead of maids and butlers, it’s our sons and daughters. While we may give our kids an equal number of chores to do, we often assign boys to take out the trash or mow the lawn. Yet how often do boys help out with housework? Daughters, it seems, are much more likely to be asked to vacuum, dust, or help in the kitchen.

Parentchild_home_programYou may not have heard of the Parent-Child Home Program, but what they’re doing is truly changing lives. Using home visits, the program helps families that are lacking in educational opportunities, working to improve the parent-child relationship and prepare children for school. The model they use has been extensively tested and researched, and has been proven to help at-risk children find success in school.
