Holitic_parentingWe all know people who buy only organic food, do yoga and meditate regularly, and swear by herbal remedies and acupuncture. Maybe we even do one or two of those things ourselves. So it should come as no surprise that many new Moms bring their holistic lifestyle to the world of motherhood.

In what is a new and fast-growing trend, holistic parenting is taking the place of the traditional parenting styles of our own parents’ generation. In fact, there is now a national group for holistic parenting, with chapters in as many as 30 states. Although the mothers don’t always agree on every point (and don’t have to in order to consider themselves holistic), this much is clear – it heralds a hot trend in parenting.

Stroller_stridesFor probably as long as the stroller has existed, parents have realized they can use it not only to transport their child, but to get out of the house, take walks, enjoy the fresh air, and exercise. With the advent of the jogging stroller, that became even easier and more enjoyable. And once again, there’s a new game in town – StrollerStrides.

This new program is spreading rapidly across the country. It features exercise classes involving outdoor and indoor activities, which make use of both power walking and body toning. Some of these toning exercises, which occur at stops along the walk, are done using the stroller, while others can be done to include your baby. Through StrollerStrides partnerships, they also offer Fit to Deliver exercise classes, L.E.A.N., an 8-week long lifestyle weight management course, and the LUNA Moms Club, meant to bring together a community of mothers and their babies.

BunkoMaybe you’ve never heard of bunco. (It’s a dice game that began in England and then moved to the American West around the time of Probibition.) Maybe you have heard of it, or you’ve played it once or twice. Or maybe you’re one of the approximately 25 million suburban women who get together to hold bunco parties on the weekends.

The has become so popular among mothers, in fact, that it is now called the “housewife’s drinking game.” Although some play for the competition and the cash prizes, mostly this is just another example of women trying to forget the stress of their weekly housework, carpools, and PTA meetings by getting together for a few hours of girls’ night.

As further evidence of this gaming trend amongst women - especially mothers - Procter & Gamble is holding the first World Bunco Championship in Las Vegas to raise money for breast cancer research at the end of the month.

A recent car accident in Illinois, after a party, left four teenagers dead and four injured in what is only one in a string of drunken driving accidents involving teens that, sadly, has become a trend across the country.

In an effort to put an end to the growing alcohol abuse by underage teens, police in Illinois are responding with a new anti-drinking program. It will include a hotline people can use to report suspicious behavior and notify parents if their car has been spotted in the neighborhood of an alcohol-fueled party. Even more striking, the program also involves breathalyzer tests administered in the home.
