Growing up, my father constantly reminded my brother and me, “Whenever you leave a room in the house, make sure to turn off the lights!” From outside, our house glowed like a flickering candle at night, wavering lights on and off as people meandered from one room into another. From the inside, the house functioned like an illumination factory of ever-present switch flicking, on…off, on…off.

For our children’s generation – and for us now – technology can smartly replace this constant energy-saving task. The Maestro Occupancy Sensing Switch from Lutron employs sensing technology to ensure lights go on, stay on, and turn off when they should. Lights automatically turn on and off without the flick of a switch, so that when active (and forgetful) kids shoot off to another room, the lights don’t run up the electricity bill. The switch also senses when other light sources such as daylight shine into a room, so the lights remain off when adequate illumination already brightens the space. The lights can cleverly continue glowing even when people remain stationary as well for quieter activities like reading.

For me, these lights also prevent fumbling for the switch when I have my hands full; the lighting offers convenience in rooms where I usually stay busy, such as the kitchen, mudroom, and laundry room. A simple finished design comes in four types of whites and beiges that subtly match a variety of rooms. The Maestro Sensing Switch employs smart technology for busy parents and kids, saving energy and conveniently working when and where we want them.
