There’s nothing better than letting our youngsters run around outside during the summer. Yet giving them some down time and getting them ready for school is important, too. From the education experts at Education.comWonderbox offers a subscription monthly box with projects and activities for kids ages three to six. The box ships to your home and inspires creativity while covertly teaching kindergarten readiness skills in a fun, hands-on way.

Each box arrives addressed to your child and contains three skill-building projects, all of the supplies needed for the activities, and other goodies. Different themes feature each month. Educators pick and approve the arts and crafts, reading games, and basic science experiments that come in the box. A cartoon character otter named Ed, remarkable for his playfulness and curiosity, also graces the contents of every box to create a continuing theme.

I like that the boxes provide high-quality materials and make the activities easy to share with kids for bonding and playing together. The boxes also employ fun, unique projects that sneakily mask essential skills, which could seem boring and tedious for kids to learn through other methods. The projects also go beyond the initial activity for extended worlds of curiosity, discovery, and play. For example, in the Stone Soup themed Wonderbox, kids can decorate a cape with crayons and then wear it for imaginative outside play.

In addition, gluing on felt, string, and googly eyes to a hand puppet then becomes a new toy, stage-ready for the box that folds into a little puppet theatre. The story cards can also be reused for endless story telling on car trips or right before bedtime. The kit even gives a recipe for making stone soup, and kids can help Mom or Dad place a stone in the soup to make it official!

The learning skills strengthened by the Wonderboxes include: letters and phonics, number sense, sorting and patterning, reading readiness, starting science, shape recognition, color exploration, and fine and gross motor skills.

Wonderbox can be found online at www.education.com and is $19.99 per month and includes free shipping.

Disclosure: Mom Central received a Stone Soup themed Wonderbox in order to facilitate this review.
