The latest news on used-to-be best friends Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton is that they may be starring in their hit reality show The Simple Life side-by-side. A recent representative for the E! network, which now produces the show, said “they want to give the viewers what they want, and what the viewers want is to see Paris and Nicole together, fighting.” Hmm… are we really in need of shameless entertainment that badly?
In the land of guys and dolled up girls there seems to be a constant fight between “friends.” Hollywood seems to revel in the constant back and forth between its Hollywood “it” girls, but what is underneath all the cat fights? Girls are being bullied all the time in school, now probably more than ever. Is hot Hollywood trying to encourage aggression in woman by pitting them against each other?
Paris may be one of the biggest instigators in the dysfunctional Hollywood family feud. She seems to make friends with other starlets just to diss them later down the line. Points in case: Lindsey Lohan, Jessica Simpson, and Nicole Richie, just to name a few. As soon as Lindsey hit the lime light Paris became her constant companion, was Lindsey prepared?
Paris offers Hollywood type perks, being able to get into any club, having a constant shopping companion, possibly getting close enough to nab some of Nicky Hilton’s famous clothing line, and the guarantee to be photographed where ever you go. One celebutant is never as good as two. However, when Lindsey hit her Paris pitfall, it was a long way down. In a recent video Paris laughed along as a less than sober oil heir, Brandon Davis, slandered Lindsey to the media. If that is how she treats her friends in front of the camera, who knows what goes on when the cameras go off.
Lindsey did not set herself up well, however, considering her history of girl fighting. She and Hilary Duff have had a long standing feud of who reigns as teen queen. At the age of 16 they publically fought over who was really dating Aaron Carter, brother of boy band member Nick Carter and hot tween pop singer. Lindsey one famously hollered “I AM NOT HILLARY DUFF!” at a confused fan during her episode of Diary on MTV. These celebrities are not waiting around to stake their ground in Hollywood.
In the infamous back and forth between Paris and Nicole we seem to be witnessing both the tragic and the performed. Paris and Nicole have known each other since they were in diapers and gained credit when they moved from greedy heiresses to money raking reality stars. However, it seems that even when you have too much money to count, money can still change everything. Paris claims that Nicole let fame go to her head, Nicole retorted by saying that Paris’ childish antics had grown tiring. So who is right? Is there a right? It seems hard to say where this feud will lead, but it is not the best display of how to handle a failing relationship.
When we now see cliques forming in the fourth grade and girls' need to distinguish themselves as popular at the tender age of ten, I am forced to wonder just how this cat fighting affects the next generation of young girls. Will they think it okay to diss their friends just to fit in with the cool crowd?
