Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn, Gwyneth Paltrow and Blythe Danner, Britney and Lynne Spears. Celeb moms turn to their moms in times of crisis, personal success and not surprisingly, when they, too, enter momhood themselves.
It seems that as trendy as giving birth seems to be lately, so is calling in the Moms to help out with the diapers, feeding and emotional baggage that comes with being a newborn newbie.
Just recently it was reported that Katie Holmes wanted to fly home to Ohio to be with her mother and her new baby, Suri. Britney Spears mother, Lynne, is planning to move to LA to be closer to her daughter, grandson Sean and soon-to-be second grandchild. Why do celebs like Kate Hudson and Britney Spears call on their moms to come give guidance to them in their time of new mother need?
I think that for celeb moms, being able to trust a non-relative to help out with your new baby is a difficult concept. Celeb mom moms have known their daughters since before the paparazzi came calling, before the agent-brokered deals and red carpet premieres. They keep their daughters grounded by being the only one who can honestly tell them they are not top dog all the time, no matter that hordes of assistants and publicists keep blowing kisses their way. They are able to show how a child must be put first - just as they, too, had put their own daughters first.
Who else is going to tell you to quit crying and take care of your kid? Who else will teach you how to be selfless, to take responsibility, and keep your child your #1 priority? Who else will tell you to forget doing a photo shoot for Elle magazine because, frankly, your baby needs bonding time with you?
I find it perfectly sweet how celeb moms are turning to their moms to help them with their new babies. It allows us to see new celeb moms not as glamorous moms who have-it-all, with nannies and chauffeurs and children's boutiques at their beck and call. They are new to motherhood and both excited and frightened that they will screw up their kids forever! Who better to rush into the rescue then Mom, the one who somehow managed to raise them to their celeb status and now, under the laws of unconditional Mom love, will help them to do the same for their own star-deliveries.
I mean, even Angelina Jolie flew her mother, French actress Marcheline Bertrand, to Namibia, when adorable Shiloh Nouvel was born. With her Mom, Angelina can shed her media image as this strong, sexy, independent kick-ass woman. Can you imagine her poignant interaction with her own mother over the birth of her first child? The tabloids should have paid to photograph that one.
Needless to say, no matter the age, celeb Moms are no exception to the "I Need my Mommy" rule. And thankfully their children will have grandmas around to constantly remind them who really gave them their good looks and star quality!
