At the tail end of the longest winter in memory, I found an escape hatch – traveling to the Busch Gardens theme parks in Tampa, Florida, and Williamsburg, Virginia. As New England battled not one, but two, late-season snowstorms, my trip to Busch Gardens revived my spirits, provided a much-needed glimpse of sun and natural beauty, and generated lots of enthusiasm for the summer to come.
I’ve recently become a spokesperson for Busch Gardens, so this trip initially offered a chance to explore the parks and see the latest attractions. But for me, it also felt like a trip home. I lived in the D.C. area during law school, and made more than one journey to Williamsburg to de-stress and feed my need for speed on the roller coasters. Moreover, as my now-college-age-kids grew up, our family made many visits to Tampa to soak up the Florida sun and let our kids create their own memories throughout the park.

Moving to a new city presents many exciting challenges, and my move to Boston in February followed suit. Some challenges are immediate and others reveal themselves as time goes on. For example, immediately it was clear that I had no idea how to navigate the Boston streets. It took me a week to figure out which roads to take to work and then a week on top of that to actually get in the right lanes on said roads. Finding a new hair salon falls into the second category, revealing itself as a latent challenge or a moment of clarity when you finally realize there’s no possible way to style your hair without your roots looking beyond neglected.
