Here in the Northeast, our year started off with a flurry of snowstorms and bone-chilling temperatures sparked by the ubiquitous Polar Vortex. While my family loves winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, we also enjoy hunkering down with a hearty meal in front of a roaring fire when the temperatures plummet and winds begin howling. Food plays an enormous role in our lives. So much so that my husband and I view both cooking and eating as significant activities. In fact, as 2014 began, I resolved to cook more hearty vegetarian fare at least once a week and when the air turned frigid, I used it as an opportunity to explore more soups and stews.

Philips Norelco Shaver 8800
Mom Central received a Philips Norelco Shaver 8800 in order to facilitate this review. All of the views expressed are our own. On May 25th of this year my beloved Boston Red Sox lost their tenth game in a row. The bearded warriors were only a few months removed from a World Series title but were slowly spiraling out of control. Flashbacks of the 2012 season hit me like a ton of bricks and I found myself breaking out in cold sweats frequent and often. The boys of summer were in need of spark and some positive mojo. I began questioning my day-to-day routine. Maybe it was something I did to cause such a tremulous fall from grace. As I stepped out of the shower one fateful morning and wiped the condensation from the mirror, I had what some people call a eureka moment. Such moments I thought were only reserved for the likes of Einstein and thermonuclear rocket scientists. My face! More exactly, my beard! I hadn’t shaved since the losing streak began.
MacPaw Hider2 App
Mom Central received a complimentary download of the Hider2 App in order to facilitate this review. All of the views expressed are our own. With new technology constantly changing and offering us up new possibilities, it takes a great deal to stand out among the applications clutter. However, the Hiber2 app from MacPaw completely caught my attention at this year’s MacWorld show in San Francisco with its ability to both hide and encrypt files on your computer. I particularly worry as a constantly on-the-go CEO about keeping sensitive files I need on my MacAir laptop from being compromised should I lose my laptop or have it stolen. While I have password protection to my laptop’s desktop, I often forget to log out as I dash from one place to the next. I also worry about sensitive personal information such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, addresses and contact information all tucked away in reminder documents on my computer.
Takeya Iced Tea System
Mom Central received a sample of the Iced Tea Beverage System in order to facilitate this review. All of the views expressed are our own. With the weather warming up and the summer season upon us, what’s better than a cold glass of iced tea? Few things taste as refreshing and delicious as fresh-brewed iced tea in the summer, especially if you throw a few sprigs of fresh mint from your garden! As an avid tea drinker, I enjoy both the hot and cold varieties, but I often find the process of making homemade iced tea tedious. I weary of the traditional brewing methods of either waiting for hot tea to cool or waiting long hours for sun tea to finish brewing. Going through the heating and cooling process, and with the temperatures on the rise, I want that cold glass of tea sooner rather than later! Luckily, Takeya has come out with an innovative beverage system that makes brewing that perfect pitcher of ice tea a cinch. You can make hand crafted, artisan iced tea beverages, but more importantly, it goes from hot, brewed tea to chilly and refreshing in literally just a few minutes.

Every Turtle Counts by Sara Hoagland Hunter
Mom Central received a complimentary copy of Every Turtle Counts in order to write this review. All of the opinions expressed are entirely our own. After growing up on Cape Cod, author Sara Hoagland Hunter finds powerful inspiration for her stories in her childhood memories and in the lives of those she loves. With a goal of giving a voice to unknown heroes, Sara has written 10 children’s books that have proven meaningful to readers of all ages. In her new, beautifully illustrated book Every Turtle Counts, Sara tells a touching story of Mimi, a young girl whose love for a lost sea turtle inspires us to cherish the difference in all things. Mimi speaks only to repeat the words of her mom, but her intuitive mind comes through easily in the pages of this book. Sara’s autistic niece inspired Mimi’s character, whose beautiful mind has both gentleness and intelligence that far exceeds our spectrum.
Reebok Checklight
Mom Central received a sample of the Reebok Checklight in order to facilitate this review. All of the views expressed are our own. When our kids have scrapes, cuts and bruises, we see them and know how to help. But with contact sports such as football, soccer and high-speed hockey, how do we know when a hit to our child’s head is considered a concussion? Over 300,000 sports-related concussions get reported around the U.S. every year. With concussions being less obvious than broken bones, when should we take our child to the doctor for a suspected head injury? After three years of research, Reebok has come up with the innovative and game-changing Checklight, a thin skullcap worn under a helmet or just as a cap on the head that detects whether or not your child has suffered a head impact at a speed and velocity indicative of a concussion.
Mom Central received a Black+Decker 20V MAX Lithium Drill/Driver with Autosense Technology to facilitate this review. The views expressed here are entirely our own. With summer upon us, we often notice a continual stream of things around the house that need to be fixed such as loose slats on the porch to doors that need adjusting. Indoors, shelves need to be put up and kitchen cabinet doors need straightening, too! Also, with warm weather comes the inspiration to take on new projects. Black+Decker’s new 20V MAX Lithium Drill/Driver with Autosense Technology offers up a fit-in-your-hand cordless power tool perfect for the “I’ll take care of that!” attitude toward fixing up your home. Black+Decker’s most compact cordless drill ever, its textured grip makes it easy to hold and simple to use as an electric screwdriver or drill. Plus, it automatically stops screws flush in the material on the first try.

Derma MD Skincare
Mom Central received complimentary skincare products from DermaMD in order to facilitate this review. All opinions expressed here are our own. For so many women, skincare falls into the category of “shoulda, coulda, woulda.” We know we should moisturize daily, address our increasingly dry skin, and begin to combat those fine lines that have suddenly cropped up. Yet so often, when faced with a choice of either a drawn-out bedtime skincare regime or collapsing in total exhaustion, we can’t help but choose bed. Defeated at nighttime, we pledge to start each day by gently cleaning our skin and using products to address such challenges as less-firm skin tone. Ten we remember we need to arrive at work early for a last-minute meeting. Or our third-grader’s science fair volcano falls apart during breakfast and we find ourselves on emergency clean-up duty.
