By Stephanie Kaufman Disclosure: I’m part of the Finish Power & Free Alliance of Moms and received complimentary product samples to facilitate this review, as well as compensation. The opinions expressed here are my own. Here in the Northeast, our year started off with a flurry of snowstorms and bone-chilling temperatures sparked by the ubiquitous Polar Vortex. While my family loves winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, we also enjoy hunkering down with a hearty meal in front of a roaring fire when the temperatures plummet and winds begin howling. Food plays an enormous role in our lives. So much so that my husband and I view both cooking and eating as significant activities. In fact, as 2014 began, I resolved to cook more hearty vegetarian fare at least once a week and when the air turned frigid, I used it as an opportunity to explore more soups and stews.

Kick Butts Day
Disclosure: The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is a client of Mom Central Consulting. Like most people who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s, I spent a whole lot of years in a cloud of smoke. I have distinct memories of eating dinner in the jam-packed smoking section of family restaurants and flying on planes when passengers eagerly lit up as soon as the pilot turned off the “no-smoking” sign. I also remember looking on incredulously as my junior high bus pulled out of the school driveway and seeing fellow students – kids my age – pulling cigarettes and lighters out of their backpacks and taking that first drag with the genuine relief of a world-weary business executive. Because smoking proved so commonplace back then, anti-smoking discussions seemed few and far between – typically limited to a unit in health class or a relative determined to send a message to the younger generation. And because we lived our lives in a smoke-filled world, they felt disingenuous at best. Yet despite the era in which I grew up, I somehow escaped becoming another statistic and never even tried smoking.

Special Olympics
While the 2014 Olympic fever in Sochi has died down, Special Olympics are still in full swing. Since 1968, Special Olympics has been offering women, men, and children with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competitions in Olympic-style sports. Special Olympics features 32 individual and team sports – from alpine skiing to volleyball – provides quality training, and well-matched sporting events. Win or lose, the goal is always to be brave in the attempt! Recently, Special Olympics kicked off their annual Spread the Word to End the Word campaign to build awareness for society to stop and think about its use of the R-word. Use of that R-word, “retard” or “retarded,” is hurtful and painful and whether intended or not, is a form of bullying. Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and friends. The R-word can be just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.
Bialetti bakeware
Mom Central received Bialetti bakeware and cookware to facilitate this review. All opinions are our own. When you marry into an Italian family, one thing is clear – good food is of the utmost importance. Meals are taken very seriously, and it’s as much about the tools used to create the dishes as it is the end result. I was first exposed to Bialetti as it is the de-facto brand of espresso maker in my mother-in-law’s house. She owns about eight of them in every size imaginable, and I of course have one in my own home. Traveling around Italy this summer, I noticed the Bialetti Moka Express coffee makers were in all the shops, and in a wide selection of color choices, too. So, I was so excited to learn that now these fun colors are available in the States, and I’m planning to add a purple one to my collection very soon!

Laser Cut Styles from ECCO Shoes
Mom Central received ECCO shoes to facilitate this review. All opinions are our own. It’s been the winter of the polar vortex, and I’ve never been more excited for Spring. While I’m a fan of seasons (and enjoy the various fashion options each inspire) I don’t think I’m alone in wishing spring a fond welcome after a winter of covering up in many layers of scarves, warm boots, down jackets, and the works. Over the weekend, I was very excited to switch out my sheepskin boots with these beautiful ECCO Pretoria Laser Cut Pumps. As with all other ECCO styles I’ve tried, these shoes proved to be strikingly unique and comfortable. The pumps made their “Spring Forward” debut as I met friends for brunch, then caught an off-Broadway play, and rounded out the day with a wine and cheese pairing – all the while feeling comfortable as ever in my new heels. My friends loved these shoes, and were quite taken by the laser cut design as well as the sturdy pump heel.
