Here in the Northeast, our year started off with a flurry of snowstorms and bone-chilling temperatures sparked by the ubiquitous Polar Vortex. While my family loves winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, we also enjoy hunkering down with a hearty meal in front of a roaring fire when the temperatures plummet and winds begin howling. Food plays an enormous role in our lives. So much so that my husband and I view both cooking and eating as significant activities. In fact, as 2014 began, I resolved to cook more hearty vegetarian fare at least once a week and when the air turned frigid, I used it as an opportunity to explore more soups and stews.

Mom Central received a Coastal Dog Malibu Bathing Suit to facilitate this review. The views expressed here are entirely our own. After a harsh New England winter and a chilly spring that only had a handful of days above 50 degrees, I’m finally cleaning out my closet to make room for my summer wardrobe. I packed the reminders of the cold weather and snow and made space for my sandals, shorts, and t-shirts. While bringing out my warm weather clothes, I found my swimsuit. Instantly, I had flashbacks of last summer and the good times I had at the beach on Martha’s Vineyard with my friends. I haven’t worn my swimsuit since that trip last August. I began drooling just thinking about the hot sun and the cool waves crashing on the shore. I can’t wait to wear my bathing suit this summer and relax on the beach for a much-needed lazy summer afternoon.
Better Hearing & Speech Month
Disclosure: The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is a client of Mom Central Consulting. With some schools already dismissed for the summer and others winding down, kids across the country are embarking on the biggest academic break of the year. While summer proves a great opportunity for kids to get outside, exercise, enjoy camp, and spend time with friends, these weeks and months away from academics can also prove challenging. With so much time away from structured learning, kids often forget what they studied during the previous school year and regress to the point that teachers typically start off the new school year by reviewing material already covered. Moreover, figures from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association show that public schools provide an estimated 13% of American kids with special services – including assistance for speech and language impairment – and when the school year ends, kids who receive these school-based services run the risk of losing ground during the summer.
Mom Central was invited to an event at the Build-A-Bear Workshop in NYC to facilitate this review. All opinions are our own. We owe so much gratitude to our troops, who dedicate so much of their time to protecting our freedom as Americans. One of the many sacrifices that members of our military make is time away from their families. The USO has partnered with Build-A-Bear Workshop to support the “Every Moment Counts” campaign, which creates moments that matter for our troops and their families. Mom Central attended an event where we learned more about this partnership, as well as Build-A-Bear’s support of the Huggable Heroes initiative. With Every Moment Counts, Build-A-Bear is helping families enjoy special moments together. Where moms and dads in the military can miss holidays, birthdays, and other special family moments, Build-A-Bear is working to bring extra joy into the lives of military families for other moments where families have precious time to spend together. At the event, children from St. Aloysius School in Harlem made bears that will be donated to military families.
Legoland Discovery Center in Somerville, MA
Mom Central was invited to a media event to cover the opening of Legoland Discovery Center. All opinions are our own. My four-year-old is a girly girl. Something about the insistence of tutus, tiaras and impromptu renditions of Frozen’s “Let It Go” in the supermarket aisles makes me scratch my head and wonder how she got this way. So when we were invited to go check out the new Legoland Discovery Center in Somerville, MA, I worried she might be bored. Sure, we play with Legos at home, but only the pink ones.
Luke’s Toy Factory
As more informed consumers, we’re always on the lookout for more natural products for both ourselves and our children to eat and to put on our bodies. But what about the toys we give to our children? Thanks to the efforts of a new company – Luke’s Toy Factory – there will soon be toys that are made with organic materials, made 100 percent from materials from the United States. In addition to being safe for our children, these materials are also sustainable. Luke’s Toy Factory is a Connecticut-based business founded by father and son team, Jim and Luke Barber. The company is currently in the midst of a KickStarter project aimed at raising funds to prove the viability of manufacturing eco-friendly, sustainable and safe children's toys in the United States. The “Eco-Truck” – a toy fire truck designed with five interlocking parts – represents the culmination of over two years of research and development conducted by the Barbers into the incorporation of organic materials such as sawdust and wheat straw in injection molded plastics.
Cabana Life Clothing
To facilitate this review, I received a sample Cabana Life Rushguard cover-up and Sun Hat. The views expressed here are entirely my own. Finally! The sun has settled into its summer appearance in Boston after all of us have cringed through a winter that introduced a whole new level of cold with “Polar Vortex.” As the summer vortex hits, it’s irresistible to spend as much time outside as possible- especially as pools send out notices of summer openings and the beaches beckon. Alongside this clamoring to stretch out in the sun comes concerns about sun protection for ourselves and our kids.

New Balance Love Boston
As Mom Central is headquartered in the Boston area, and many of us even at the other offices have local ties to the Bay State, we were excited to learn about a new campaign launched by another Boston hometown corporation – New Balance – that celebrates running in Boston. The “Love Boston” line from New Balance honors runners in the Boston area and beyond who love Boston. As someone who grew up in a suburb outside of Boston myself, I was delighted to learn about this partnership and have the chance to share my hometown support via this new line! We also recognize that many runners all over the world have shown an outpour of support for Boston runners over the past year, and this line is a great way for runners to show their support.
