ImageParent Talk! The Art of Effective Communication With the School and Your Child

by Cheli Cerra, M.Ed. & Ruth Jacoby, Ed.D.

Parent Talk! aims to help parents communicate with their children and their children’s school. Authors Cheli Cerra and Ruth Jacoby are both principals of schools that received A+ rankings from the Florida Department of Education, and their expertise in education is evident on every page of this clearly-written book. But the authors are also parents, so they are keenly aware of what questions parents want to ask and why.

Parent Talk! is divided into sections by seasons and presents each question as a numbered “snapshot.” Then, Cerra and Jacoby suggest how the parent of an elementary school, middle school, and high school-aged child should approach each problem. While they answer most questions from the point of view of a principal, they also offer “Parent-to-Parent Tips” that draw from their own experience.

One refreshing thing about Parent Talk! is its attention to many topics that are often overlooked. It doesn’t assume that all schools are alike, and along with concerns such as “My Child Does Not Enjoy Reading” and “My Child is Late to Class Daily” are more serious issues, such as drugs at school, threats of violence, unhealthy mildew in classrooms, and a lack of textbooks. It also has many snapshots that are specific to working, single moms, such as “I Am Recently Divorced and Have Sole Custody of My Child” and “I Can’t Attend Open House.”

This is the perfect book for parents who are unsure of how to address the concerns they have with their children’s school. It touches on issues that are serious, but that parents, whether they want to admit it or not, are likely to face.
