In 2003, the revised edition of Jeanne and Don Elium’s 1994 book Raising a Daughter was released, and its message about the issues facing parents raising  girls is as relevant as ever.

Raising a Daughter addresses specific problems that girls face in their lives, including the mixed messages they receive from others—should they embrace femininity or strive to be like men? It also talks about serious issues such as bullying, depression, sexuality, and eating disorders. Additionally, the Eliums devote entire sections to specific stages of a girl’s life (birth to seven, eight to twelve, thirteen to seventeen, and eighteen to twenty-nine) and the roles that each parent needs to play in a daughter’s life during those times.

The Eliums also offer good suggestions on communication. They describe a system of “setting fences” to develop personal boundaries and have some interesting insights on the differences between male and female communication—for example, women usually prefer to talk face-to-face while men prefer to talk side-by-side.

Raising a Daughter is very straightforward and easy to understand, and each chapter is punctuated with quotes from real people as well as books and articles. It’s a great book for parents interested in learning more about issues unique to girls.
