 The Shopping Bags

Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic are two girls from Vancouver who I met on the Rachael Ray Show. Their book, The Shopping Bags offers insightful and, often, unknown tips about being a smart consumer when picking out everything from diapers to appliances to mascara. When they spoke, I listened, and some of their advice made me want to run home and check my own products! Theirs’ is a must-have guide before going out to do any kind of shopping.

Here are some of their most intriguing tips:

•    A backyard jungle gym made from wood is sturdier than one made from metal or plastic. Cedar or redwood are good choices.
•    With china, hold a plate up to the light. A dish made of fine china will allow you to see the shadow of your hand behind it.
•    Good-quality stainless-steel flatware will have the numbers 18/10 stamped on the back of each piece. The first number reflects the percentage of chromium, which prevents your flatware from rusting, and the second refers to the nickel content for shine and strength. Lesser-quality flatware will have a lower nickel number. (Ideally, shoot for at least 18/8!)
•    When shopping for a vacuum, look for a cog belt versus a flat belt. Cog belts are more reliable.
•    Buy a coffee machine with a cone-shaped filter rather than a flat-bottom liner. The V shape ensures that more water will come into contact with more coffee.
•    If you’re painting a room, put heavy moisturizer on your exposed skin before starting the job. It’ll make any splatters much easier to remove.
•    When buying a washing machine, ask if the machine has a direct-drive or a belt-driven transmission. Direct drive will need fewer repairs but have a bigger price tag. Also, electric controls are more difficult to fix than mechanical dials.
