Too often, says Dr. Dawna Markova, when we worry that a child isn’t performing up to her potential, we focus on what’s wrong: Does she have ADD? Is she oppositional? Instead, Markova writes in her book The Smart Parenting Revolution, we need to focus on her strengths.

Markova criticizes the current culture of standardized tests, saying that it stifles creativity and discourages kids from looking at a problem from multiple angles. It also affects adults in the workforce, since the competitive schools they attend impede their ability to think collaboratively. Markova encourages parents to look beyond tests to discover their child’s abilities.

Markova also describes many ways to identify what’s right with your child instead of what’s wrong. For example, if she has trouble paying attention, it could be that her imagination is working in overtime and she needs outlets for her creativity. She shows how parents can recognize what skills and passions their child has and how their child thinks. More importantly, she shows how parents can help children learn from past successes and utilize their talents to succeed in the future. She tells parents how to know which learning style their children do best with and how to encourage them to do their work in such a way.

This is a great book because of its positive approach to education and its belief in the potential of each child.
