As technology improves, so does our appetite to have the “latest.” Upgrading iPods, cell phones and blackberrys is pretty common. The amounts of gadgets we acquire seems to increase faster and faster as the years go on, which leads me to an important question: Have we turned into a disposable society? I say “YES!” And, let’s remember that along with the gift of innovation comes great responsibility (sounds like Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but you get the idea).

Organic gardening involves a "whole system" approach to growing plants that begins with recycling natural materials back into the soil to maintain and increase soil fertility. Organic gardeners strengthen their soil by adding compost, and by mulching (covering the top layer of soil with a couple inches of shredded wood bark, decomposed leaves, or grass clippings to retain moisture). Rather than rely on synthetic pesticides and insecticides, organic gardening encourages natural methods of pest and disease control.

Given the thousands of green products being introduced these days, and the vague marketing claims being used to sell them, you don’t want to blow your budget just to keep up with the newest “eco,” “herbal,” or “biodegradable” fad – especially if the claim turns out to be more greenwashing than green.
