In May, Mom Central surveyed a panel of 878 Moms to find out how their food shopping and eating habits have shifted in the economic downturn. This recession has presented Moms and their families with new challenges when it comes to balancing their healthy lifestyles with tightening budgets. From clipping coupons to shopping at more cost-efficient stores, many Moms have come up with creative solutions to deal with these new priorities.
Moms feel the stress of tightening food-shopping budgets:
95% of Moms reported they had changed their food shopping habits in the past 6 months, with 30% reporting major or "radical" changes. 45% of Moms indicated that food shopping made them stressed or anxious, and nearly half (48%) noted that they had to make a choice between value and nutrition in the past year.
Moms are making changes in how they shop for groceries:
76% of Moms clip more coupons than in previous years. Over half (53%) of Moms say they shop at several stores to buy the lowest-priced goods, while 40% buy less food in general and nearly a quarter (24%) say they grow their own food to save money on their shopping bills. Moms save on the types of foods they buy as well - 43% buy more in bulk and 27% buy more frozen foods. Additionally, half of Moms buy more store brand or generic food items to save.
Families are changing how they eat:
71% of Moms say they eat out less often than they used to, with more than half (55%) reporting that their family eats leftovers more frequently. Furthermore, 51% get take-out less often, while 47% indicate that they pack a lunch to save money. And the one thing many Moms aren't cutting back on? 80% of Moms still get their morning coffee and snacks.
