I want to potty train Garrett but I don't even know where to start. He knows where and that he must sit on the potty. He knows how to flush the potty. But he does not understand what it is for. Biggest problem he really doesn't talk.. Any advice would be helpfull. Thanks guys in advance.

Hi Garrett's Mom!

Here's some of Stacy DeBroff's best advice for potty training.

Potty Training Tips

Hope it helps!

I would just try putting him on the potty every half hour or so and see how he does. I had the biggest problem with Owen cause he wouldn't poop on the toilet... so I stopped training him, he was 2.5 and then just before his 3rd birthday he did it all by himself!

Good luck!

Randy was a bit difficult to train. He started following me to the bathroom when he was about 20 months old. At about 23 mo he wanted to go whenever his siblings went. He didn't always go, but it was a start. A couple of mo later he he would go every time we would go some place, but not at home. It took awhile. Once he started going at home, we took his diaper away. He had very few accidents after that.
Some times it's hard not to push. Just remind yourself it will happen at their own pace, it just takes a lot of patience.

He just doesn't seem to care when his pull up or underwear are dirty. He will sit on the potty and when you ask if he has to go he will run into the bathroom and sit on the potty for a min. But i really don't think he knows what it is for. I just don't even know where to start in reality.

With Deven I got the book how to potty train in a day. No it didn't work in 1 day, but he did potty train in 4 weeks. Basically the idea is to let them train a doll (get one that pees) and do this for a few days (until he gets it) then start putting him on the potty and make a really big deal out of it (everyone need to chip in here, if your family and friends can praise him on the phone that's even better). As rewards give lots of liquids ( this of course makes him have to go potty more). You really need to spend a lot of time doing this so aim for an uneventfull weekend.
