I Dare You

Although practically every young girl today can program a DVD player, work a Blackberry, and download music to an mp3 player without hesitation, how many know the rules of tetherball, the ins and outs of espionage, or the science of snowballs? The answer, sadly, is not as many as in the old days.

But with any luck that’s about to change. After the release of the highly successful The Dangerous Book for Boys, my beloved friends Andi Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz decided boys shouldn’t get to have all of the fun. After all, the two women spent their own childhoods not behind computer screens or video games, but in bedroom forts, tree houses, and just scampering around the neighborhood for hours, letting their imaginations run wild. Thus comes The Daring Book for Girls , a book that will put the creativity back into a girl's childhood.

This book, dedicated to “every girl with an independent spirit and a nose for trouble,” is just the type of book we all want our daughters to have. Isn't this where Nancy Drew left off? With educational lessons and daring activities to try out, this book will not only keep girls entertained, but enhance their lives as well. By instilling confidence, creativity, and a sense of adventure in young girls, this is more than a book – it’s a history class, a life lesson, a way to really make childhood fun again (without expensive toys), and a great infuser of female empowerment. What more could you possibly want from a book?

Contained within the bright blue (and sparkly) cover is everything from twelve different games of tag and the rules of baseball to stories of famous women adventurers (spies, pirates, leaders, and more). After reading this book, your daughter will be starting clubs, running top-secret missions, bird watching, canoe paddling, making friendship bracelets, and relying on herself and a little ingenuity to make anything fun.

I can’t imagine another book doing what this one will do for girls today. Needing only an adventurous participant and occasionally some adult supervision, the book is filled with lessons and adventures that will make even older brothers envious. With enough inspiration to make any day feel like a lazy Sunday of past generations and enough heart to teach girls a lesson or two about being women, this book helps girls gain knowledge, self-esteem, creativity, and downright fun. You’ll be amazed when you see how your daughter responds to this book – my 15-year-old daughter (who I thought was too old for this book) cuddled up with it on the couch this afternoon, musing and smiling as she read sections that grabbed her interest. Love that!
