In the past, a number of experts have said that our society is one of over-diagnoses; that too many of our children are prescribed medication and given labels that they can never escape. When one of these experts is a medical doctor specializing in child psychiatry, we should take notice. Dr. Scott M. Shannon, along with Emily Heckman, brings us this new book, Please Don’t Label My Child, to help parents understand how they should be dealing with a child who just doesn’t fit in.
Instead of blaming something internal to the child, Dr. Shannon says that we should be focusing on “brain stressors” – external forces that prevent children from thriving. This book will help parents understand the cost of labels as well as how the family, the environment, school, trauma, nutrition, and relationships all affect our children’s adjustment, behavior, and development. With thoroughly explained and easy to grasp medical information, actual stories used as examples, and a wealth of information and advice about helping your child flourish, this book is a necessary resource for all parents, whether or not they see their child having a problem. Nothing is more important than a child’s healthy development, and, with Dr. Shannon’s help, all parents can be off to a great start when it comes to their children.
