Tips to get your holiday cards done early.

I keep a list in an accordion file of people who we regularly send holiday, birthday, or any occasional cards to. I buy them when I find good deal and organize them by month. I simply look at what holiday or birthday is coming up and mail the cards as the time comes. I keep my listed updated by adding people who send us cards and whose addresses have changed. - Sherry, mom of Samantha, 3 1/2, and Jack, 19 months

Many of the holiday cards my family receives each year feature photographs of friends and family. To display them all, I hang rows of festive ribbons from ceiling to floor in my family room and staple on the cards as they arrive. The cards have become the centerpieces of our decorations. When I mail my own holiday cards, I include a typed, one-page family update to keep friends and family informed without wearing me out every season. Even local friends appreciate the news they might have missed throughout the year.

Don't send out hundreds of holiday cards if you don't enjoy it.

Stock up on greeting cards early to save time during the holiday crunch. If you buy them off-season you're likely to get a big discount as well.

If you include a photo with your holiday cards, take pictures early in the fall to allow time for another try in case they do not turn out well, or select a snapshot you've taken during the year and send away for multiple copies.

Pick one night or weekend afternoon for the whole family to work on holiday cards together. Purchase craft supplies you'll need ahead of time. Your child can sign cards, decorate them, affix stamps, or make drawings for recipients they know. Or have your child use your drawing program or clip art on your computer to create personalized cards.

Make a computerized list to keep track of the names and addresses of friends and family with whom you exchange greeting cards.

Address holiday cards and send them right after Thanksgiving.

Make a social event of baking cookies or filling out cards. Get together with friends and make a night of it.

Slip your address book in a tote along with holiday cards, so you can fill them out while waiting for your child at school or practice.

Address all the envelopes for your cards at once to avoid returning to your address book every time you finish a card.

Getting out holiday cards is a favorite tradition here. While fireside drinking cocoa, I go down my list while my son makes his cards (with a little help :)
It's just the thing to kick off the holiday season here.
