With three five-year-olds and a newborn, Jana Mathews, The Meanest Mom blogger, didn’t wait until the day before Halloween to think about costumes. This August, Mathews picked up three costumes — a koala, a baboon, and a panda — on the cheap at a local thrift store in Philadelphia.

With Halloween around the corner, moms everywhere are beginning to engage in the universal ritual of inner-debate: How do I make this holiday fun and yet healthy, Earth-friendly and oh, yah, affordable? Luckily, moms, you can have it all.  
 
The key is to base your holiday choices on the 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle. Using them will help you plan healthy and earth-friendly holidays that are simple, quick and affordable to boot.

ChristmasWhen I think of Christmas, I remember family gatherings around my grandparent’s dinner table. I also think of times my family spent time together, creating our own special memories. For example, one year I received a tape recorder. On Christmas Day, my mother, father, brother and I recorded stories, changing our voices to fit our various roles. While I no longer have the tape of our recordings, the memory of our fun is something I’ll never forget.
